Founded first as an Etruscan – perhaps even pre-Etruscan, settlement, Arezzo was occupied by the Romans who left their traces with their imposing buildings, including an amphitheater that can still be seen today. A free medieval town, the most important monuments of the city date back to that time: a Gothic-style cathedral, Piazza Grande with Vasari’s Loggia, the Medici Fortress for military purposes, and then the house of Laura’s poet in love with Laura – the Petrarca -, and the birthplace of Vasari, now a museum. In Italian history Vasari is the first true historian of art that our country has had: it is precisely his home, richly furnished and painted, with works of inestimable value for its features and historical heritage.
