MASSA CARRARA
The organization in the provinces unites officially establishes the bond between these two cities, located a short distance from each other, but with a strong individual identity. The cathedral of Massa – made of white marble from the Carrara quarries – has an imperial staircase that leads to the entrance and is the heart of the historic center. On the surrounding hill stands the Malaspina Castle, while in Piazza Aranci overlooks the Palazzo Ducale.
Carrara, instead, situated at the foot of the Apuan Alps and overlooking the sea, is the seat of the Academy of Fine Arts, but shares with Massa the domination of the Malaspina family who built a fortress here: the Cybo-Malaspina Castle. Rich in palaces, monuments to historical figures and with a fair amount of commercial traffic, the city has always been appreciated for its material, so loved by artists over the centuries: a prized white marble from nearby quarries.
To access the territory of the municipality of Carrara it is necessary to have a ticket, at a cost of € 45.00, while in Massa the entrance for tourist coaches is free.
